Rome is a truly great city and, like all great cities, it has proved to
be a fertile source of inspiration for some wonderful writers. From the
classics to contemporary literature there is something for all book
lovers. If you're planning on a walking holiday in Rome, indulge in a
few of these before you go and you may be able to walk in their very
footsteps.
The Classics
The writing of William Shakespeare
is always a good place to start, and he chose Rome as the setting for
Coriolanus. This epic political tale chronicles the life of the warrior
Caius Marcius Coriolanus, whose inability to empathise with the ordinary
people of Rome led to his downfall. Of course as with many of
Shakespeare's plays, Coriolanus has been adapted to the big screen, most
recently with Ralph Fiennes in the starring role.
If you want to
brush up on your Roman history before embarking on your walking holiday
in Rome an excellent place to start is The Twelve Caesars by Suetonius.
Written in around AD122 it has been translated from the original Latin
by Robert Graves and gives a great insight into life in ancient Rome.
Suetonius was a scholar who acted as private secretary to the Emperor
Hadrian, which gave him great access to the imperial archives. He used
them well to produce this biographical account of the most powerful men
of the time, including Julius Caesar and Augustus. Another book to give
you a great historical background to your trip is The Early History of
Rome Books 1-5 by Livy. It records the historical events of the
foundation of Rome right through the reign of the seven Kings and on to
the establishment of the Republic.
20th Century Writers
If
you'd like a fictional account of the goings on in Ancient Rome, Robert
Graves' 1934 novel I, Claudius is an excellent choice. Anyone who
watched the 1970s television adaptation of this novel will remember the
decadence and plotting of the main characters.
For a picture of
Rome during World War II, Elsa Morante's 1974 History: A Novel is the
story of a woman and her two sons living their lives in war torn Rome.
Post War Rome is the subject of Tennessee William's The Roman Spring of
Mrs Stone, in which he tells the story of the rich American widow Karen
Stone who arrives in Rome after the end of the Second World War.
