New Zealand's history is as diverse as its breathtakingly beautiful
landscapes. The literary heritage of this country is fascinating and
pre-dates the arrival of the Europeans, but it is not just local

The Literary Heritage
The
best-known writer to come out of the country is probably Katherine
Mansfield, whose works date from the late 19th and 20th centuries. She
was born in Wellington and grew up there, although she later moved to
Europe where she died prematurely of TB when she was thirty-four. As an
adult, she lived a Bohemian life in London and was a friend of Virginia
Woolf and D H Lawrence. Although her life was short she was a prolific
writer of modernist short fiction and many of her stories reflect her
nostalgic reminiscences of her formative years in her homeland. Visit
the Katherine Mansfield Birthplace before you embark on any of the walks
in New Zealand and you will understand her inspiration.
The
storytelling tradition was in place long before Europeans arrived on the
shores of the Land of the Long White Cloud. The Maori people were
responsible for establishing this tradition and there is no better way
to hear these wondrous legends than from a descendant of the original
storytellers - so if you get the opportunity, grab it.
For Haiku
fans, a stroll along the Haiku Pathway is a must; the pathway runs along
the river's edge in the Bay of Plenty and boasts twenty-four stones
engraved with Haikus for you to enjoy. It is the largest collection of
Haiku stones outside of Japan.
Literature on Film
Of
course, all fans of J R R Tolkien will be well aware that the epic film
adaptations, directed by local Peter Jackson, of the Lord of the Rings
Saga and The Hobbit have been filmed here. Hobbiton is the sheep farm
that was used as the setting for the Shire in both trilogies and is
about a three-hour drive from Auckland in the Matamata area. There are
many tours based on Middle Earth and Tolkien fans will find an abundance
of material on this subject.
