Brandi never graduated from college, but with every passing day in her
current job, she was making plans to go back to finish her diploma. It
wasn't that she didn't enjoy her job, actually she really liked it and
it paid well, she just wanted to feel a bit smarter and learn about a
wide variety of topics. She worked as a secretary running a complex of
apartments. It provided a steady schedule, good benefits, and best of
all, some amazing stories. When she was offered the position, she never
imagined the things that she would hear and the hilarious predicaments
that some of the tenants could get into.
The apartments that her
office ran had about 70 units in the complex and four buildings. Each
building was three stories high and the entrances to each apartment
opened to the outdoors. The funniest and most shocking episode was when
she arrived at work one day and received seventeen voice mails from
different tenants in one of the buildings that there was someone
climbing up the outside of the building. One resident was sure that it
was someone breaking in. What Brandi discovered that morning was that a
woman who lived on the third floor had locked her door when she left
that evening to go get dinner and when she returned home, she
accidentally locked her whole key ring in her car, which meant she could
not get into either her car or her home. Since her phone was also
safely tucked in her purse, now locked in her car, she decided the only
thing to do was to climb the tree and get onto her balcony where she
could enter through the sliding door that she rarely locked.
So
this woman started climbing the tree, and since the last time she had
done that was when she was a child, it was a slow going process that
involved lots of twigs breaking, footing issues, and balance checks.
After about 45 minutes she made it high enough in the tree that she was
even with her balcony, but to get there she had to shimmy out on a limb,
grab onto a drainpipe to use as balance, and acrobatically get her legs
over the balcony railing. This process took another half hour, but she
finally made it. Exhausted she grabbed onto the sliding door, only to
find it locked. Then she remembered that she had decided it would be
safer if she started locking it, just in case, since she lived alone.
The thought seemed preposterous to her now given what she had gone
through to get up there.
