Choosing an accounting software is like buying a car. There are so many
makes and models and they all have similar yet different bells and
whistles. And let's not mention the colors and how pretty they are. So
how do you choose?
Well you are going to have to roll up your
sleeves and start digging. Do your research. Don't just pick a software
because everyone else is using it. Find the one that works best for you
and your business that is also within your budget. There are software's
at every price point you can think of. Some are one time payments and
some are monthly subscriptions. So even if the cash isn't pouring in the
door yet; you want to be prepared for when it does start pouring in so
that you can know how your business is truly performing.
Here are some characteristics that I think you should consider when choosing the software that is best for you.
Ease
of Use. You want your software to be extremely user friendly.
Especially if you are not too great with technology. Try to pick one as
"dummy" proof as possible. And be sure to factor in how you can receive
additional training if needed. Nothing is worse than buying something
you don't know how to use and no one else does either.
Industry
and service. Believe it or not, some software's are industry specific.
Now that comes into play mostly with the larger software's but the
smaller software companies are catching on too. And as a result they are
offering different versions that are for different industries. But
don't be fooled into buying it based solely on that. Make sure that the
extra industry specific features are worth the extra dollars.
Features
and benefits. These are the bells and whistles; the bright shiny
objects that lure you in. Review them carefully. Compare as much as
possible. You want to be sure that you are choosing a software that has
the features and benefits you need not the ones you want. You can always
upgrade later.
Feedback. You definitely want to take a look at
what other people are saying about the software's you are considering.
Check out the good reviews and the bad ones. Which are there more of? As
you read them, trust your gut. If it sounds like its more trouble than
it's worth, move on to the next. Don't let one shiny feature outweigh
the fifty broken and cracked ones.
Price Point. Obviously this is
going to be one of your deciding factors. All of the other factors will
help you narrow down your choices to two or three, but price always
helps you pick the winner. You don't want to break the bank; you simply
want the one that provides you the most benefit for the cost.
